The format is a little distracting at times, with one page, detached set pieces interrupting the flow of the narrative. But that is a small thing. This is a needed contribution to the literature about the formation of the Great American Songbook. Feb 18, Brian Wasserman rated it really liked it.

I think this book would be very interesting to anyone who enjoys the great american songbook. Dorothy Fields co-wrote many well known songs, and when she was doing this, there were very few other female songwriters. Jul 11, Nicole rated it really liked it Shelves: books-about-theatre.
A solid introduction to Dorothy Fields that could do with diving a little deeper into both her personal and professional lives. The inclusion of her lyrics is perfect and the quantity of photographs used is wonderful although they are oddly used and sometimes repeated. Oliver lovingly reworked the arrangements for a female vocal trio that included Russell, her late mother, Carline Ray, and his late wife, Lillian Clark.
Oliver was hired by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in as arranger and vocalist, becoming one of the first African-American musicians to assume a prominent role in a white orchestra.
Clark and Oliver married, and as a gift to his wife, Oliver rearranged many of his famous vocal harmony numbers, for a female trio. Carline recommended her daughter to sing the third part, and a new vocal trio was born.
